If your funny older sister were the former deputy chief of staff to President Barack Obama, her behind-the-scenes political memoir would look something like this.... Alyssa Mastromonaco worked for Barack Obama for almost a decade and long before his run for president. From the then-senator´s early days in Congress to his years in the Oval Office, she made Hope and Change happen through blood, sweat, tears and lots of briefing binders. But for every historic occasion - meeting the queen at Buckingham Palace, bursting in on secret climate talks or nailing a campaign speech in a hailstorm - there were dozens of less-than-perfect moments when it was up to Alyssa to save the day. Like the time she learned the hard way that there aren´t nearly enough bathrooms at the Vatican. Full of hilarious, never-before-told stories, Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? is an intimate portrait of a president, a book about how to get stuff done and the story of how one woman challenged, again and again, what a White House official is supposed to look like. Here Alyssa shares the strategies that made her successful in politics and beyond, including the importance of confidence, the value of not being a jerk, and why ultimately everything comes down to hard work (and always carrying a spare tampon). Told in a smart, original voice and topped off with a couple of really good cat stories, Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? is the brilliantly funny, frank and inspirational memoir from a savvy political star. Despite more power and choices than ever before, women are still angry - that´s not necessarily a bad thing, as anger is what continues to open the door for change. In this collection, 15 women speak boldly and passionately about choices they´ve made - about sex, children, love and work - and explore what´s working and what is not. Their essays - always provocative, honest, witty, and wise - are the culmination of the lessons of the past two decades, the ´´me´´ years and the therapy years, the years that have taught women to express themselves and acknowledge their needs. As celebratory as they are critical, these brilliant essays reflect the truth about life. Gail Gibbons uses clear, simple wording to present all the steps involved in building a house. From the architect who draws the plans, through the various types of workers who construct it, to the family who will make the house their home, each aspect is explained. Children can easily follow along as construction begins at the ground level with surveyors, describing the jobs of carpenters and plumbers. The many tools used to complete each task are explained, ultimately showing how all the workers´ efforts come together to build a whole house from basement to roof, both inside and outside. 1. The House of the Dead was published in 1862 by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky. It is very different from Dostoevsky´s more famous and intricately plotted novels, like Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov. The book is a loosely-knit collection of facts and events connected to life in a Siberian prison, organized by ´´theme´´ rather than as a continuous story. Dostoevsky himself spent four years as a political prisoner in such a camp. This experience allowed him to describe with great authenticity the conditions of prison life and the characters of the convicts. Thus, though presented as a work of fiction, The House of the Dead is actually a thinly veiled autobiography of one portion of the author´s life. Although not Dostoevsky´s greatest work, The House of the Dead is still a fascinating portrait of life in a Siberian prison camp - a life of great hardship and deprivation, yet filled with simple moments of humanity showing mankind´s ability to adapt and survive in the most extreme of circumstances. Dostoevsky tells his story in a chronological order, from his character´s arrival and his sense of alienation to his gradual adjustment to prison and the return of hope as he realises that he can survive and will have a life after the completion of his term. The book is universally acknowledged as a classic and is a fascinating story, especially for those familiar with Dostoevsky and his other works. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Walter Covell.
